Toonpur Ka Superhero – A Real Fantasy World

‘Toonpur Ka Superhero’ is a beautiful movie for many reasons. It is not only a first of its kind, but also a children’s movie which is equally entertaining for adults. (Even I want to see it once more!) Plain everyday dialogues not only makes you laugh, but simple true emotions bring tears to your eyes and the video game played between real people and cartoons make you sit on the edge counting seconds with your kids as you do in a real game! This sweet simple clean movie is a ‘down to earth fantasy’. It comes as a surprise because we go to the movie expecting a children’s movie but come out smiling together with the kids. It’s a true family movie with which you can easily relate yourself.

First of its kind in India
The main attraction of the film is its new concept, which is a first in our country. The story connects the real world and its real people with the cartoon world. Kids love cartoons and may dream of finding themselves in the cartoon world. But here an adult, the lead actor Ajay Devgan (Aditya) is actually kidnapped by his son’s favorite cartoons and he tries to win his son’s affections by helping the good toons erase the evil toons. The story is nicely woven and we are easily transported from the real to the cartoon world and vice-versa. It’s like a live dream! Even though unreal, no where does it seem superficial.

A real life loving modern family
The beauty of the movie is its simplicity of topic. The story moves with the common emotions of parents and children through another common feature of every home with kids – cartoons and video games. Parents can easily connect with the way Kajol as mother disciplines her kids and teaches them simple values of life, like never hurting anyone by words or any other way, however angry you may be. It is about the average small family life where parents want to see their kids grow up happily with morals. The role of mother and father is perfectly balanced.

Role of father
A beautiful feature of this movie is the highlighting of the father as a parent. Our movies have always glorified the mother, her emotions, strengths and sacrifices. Watch this movie to get a feel of how fathers feel. Even fathers have to struggle between professional commitments and love for the family. Fathers too feel guilty for not being able to devote enough time for the kids. Mothers easily get the kids’ attention naturally and abundantly, but the doting father has to prove himself to get the affection he desires from the children. He wants to live up to his kid’s expectations. This is more satisfying as a father than any professional success.

Portrayal of mother
The central role is that of the father in the movie. But the mother’s character is nicely portrayed as an absolute equal in the family. She is the confident modern day housewife who can handle things on her own. As man and wife they compliment each other and allow the better one to take charge wherever required. Kajol is even funnily shown as taking charge of situations in the video games where more brains are required. But it has been enacted so naturally that no where do we feel anyone to be inferior. Everywhere the two balance each other.

Natural performance
The credit for the successful combination of real and animated world goes to the absolutely natural performances of Ajay and Kajol. They are perfectly comfortable in the role as husband and wife and as parents. They are equally natural and comfortable when acting with the animated characters too. It is difficult to act naturally with an unreal character. It can appear artificial. But Ajay Devgan carried off his role beautifully. And Kajol is as usual the most-most natural actress! Even the funny part of her role as a person pre occupied with vaastu shashtra is enacted with perfection. She is equally good at both comedy and emotional roles.

The happy feel of the movie lasts in the mind for a long time. It’s as if ayou are sitting at home playing video games with your kids during the weekend! Go and watch it!
