The dangers of using steroids

Human body produces certain hormones that enable its proper functioning, growth and development. These hormones help us to fight the adverse conditions of body as well as mind.  Steroids are synthetic supplements to these hormones. When these artificial hormones are used under medical supervision, they can be really valuable. It can be effectively used in treating ailments like asthma, arthritis or immunity problems. Even so medical consultation should be strictly observed since unaided use may lead to irrevocable damage to the psychological and physiological structure of an individual.

In the recent years it has been found that steroids are widely being used by people who are already in ‘good health’. People who are much interested in body building use steroids ‘considerably’, to increase their body mass. Steroids can really help to increase body muscles and can render the perfect masculine look. It is also used by athletes who wish to improve their performance standards. More than a practice, steroids have become a dangerous trend. In such a scenario, it is important to realize the risks involved in the process to make a fair decision about its usage. A steroid may work wonders but it is not a drug with health-giving benefits.

The kinds of steroids in use

One might get astonished with the fact that there are more than one hundred types of steroids in business. But still the most commonly used variant is ‘anabolic steroid’. These are artificial hormones much like the male sex hormones- adrenalin and testosterone.  Its effects are just as the effects of normal testosterone. Then there is another kind of steroids, called the ‘steroidal supplements’ that contains ‘dehydroepiandrosterone’ and ‘androstenedione’ generally known as DHEA and andro. Though the effects may vary with the type and quantity, it has been readily proved that steroids can promote long-lasting negative effects to the body.

Steroids on human body

Steroids can trigger vast growth and development of the body. A steroid can act on human body in diverse ways. It can improve athletic performance, bestow an alluring, chiseled body shape and figure, promote greater power and better confidence. There are also non-anabolic steroids like Cortisone and Prednisone that are usually prescribed by a doctor solely for medicinal purposes and they don’t endorse the effects of androgens like anabolic steroids.

The risks involved in using steroids

Using an anabolic steroid involves a risk factor that can be mild or hard. It can result in

  • losing hair and gradual baldness
  • hypertension
  • liver damage
  • heart problems
  • muscle injury
  • stroke
  • impotency and sterility in men
  • facial hair growth and other masculine traits in women
  • increased aggression and depression
  • bacterial infections and
  • severe mental problems like paranoia or suicidal tendency.

Many people find steroids as a better choice for an instant boost up. But taking into account the long term negative consequences, it is better not to give it a try.  Though a good diet and exercise program may take some time to work, we are better off with it.
