Stardock Fences Review

Fences is a wonderful easy-to-use desktop customization application by Stardock corporation. It is a desktop organiser and therefore beneficial to those with disorganised and unclean desktops having a large number of files and folders. The full version i.e. Fences Pro costs $19.95. A free version is also available which has the basic features of the full version and can be used on your systems. However, auto-sorting feature is missing in the free version. Here, I take a look at the performance of this application and its practical applications.

Features- Fences significantly increases productivity by organising the desktop which is in a state of chaos. There are a lot of features which the Pro version has to offer. Fences does not manage multiple displays but it successfully manages the icons on multiple displays. Various sections can be created on the desktop which can be assigned different names and you can also add icons to it after fences sorts them. Each section on the desktop remains different. Moreover, you can create, sort, scroll and rename fences. The organisation can also be done manually by you. Most often, the resolution of the screen changes when the desktop is organised and as soon as the resolution is altered, the icons rearrange themselves. To prevent wastage of your time in arranging the icons, Fences takes snapshots of the desktop so that the organisation remains intact even if something goes wrong.

To keep your desktop totally clean, Fences hides all the desktop icons on a double-click. Fences also gives you the option of retaining one or more icons on the screen even if you double-click on the desktop. There is no limit as to how many icons Fences can arrange. It works smoothly even with a very high number of icons.

Performance- The full version is more stable and has more features compared to the free version. Fences checks for updates automatically and is therefore always up to date. There are a few problems which arise in the free version after changing certain settings. Icons go missing and have to be organised again. They may also end up at the wrong fence if it is auto organising. Fences doesn’t slow down the computer and works smoothly on Windows Vista, Windows 7 and XP.

Conclusion- Overall, Fences is custom-made for those who have a large number of icons on their desktop and there is a high need for organisation to improve productivity in terms of time.
