Smiling- A rocket science for us?

Smile,It costs you nothing...

Date : July 18th 2009

Location: Uppal X Roads,Hyderabad,Andhra Pradesh,INDIA

Every time some one said ” A picture speaks a thousand words” I felt I knew the meaning of it. I never knew until this day of 18th July 2009 the real meaning behind these invaluable lines.

This location is a bare 1 mile walk from my home.I pass by this place every day on way to work, college and to shop.I never cared to know what lay beyond those huts and who stayed in them.On this fine morning, I was the member of a photowalk team that was assigned to capture the lives of these people living in that area.

The residents of this area were artisans from distant lands of Rajasthan and Gujarat, who camped here all year long to make idols for the festivals of Lord Vinayaka and Goddess Kali. The children of these artisans were so excited to see someone clicking their portraits. They queued up in lines, each wanting to be the star of the day.

Everytime I looked through the lens to capture a moment I felt I was being taught something. Today back home looking through the photographs, I realise how much these kids were teaching me. I rarely remember smiling like them in the last ten years of my life. May be I did . But it was never an ever lasting joy giving smile.

Pondering more on this I realise how rare it is to come across your neighbor  round the corner of your street and find them show you their smiling face. I know people feel the same way when they come across me. But ya I have begun to educate myself with The Lessons of Smiling.

  8. In the busy world of today, we have become so self-centred and eccentric that smiling is the last thing ever in our minds. The smiling faces of these children have reminded me of true innocence and spirit of joy after perhaps a long time. Today, after seeing this picture, I am smiling and feeling a lot relieved after a huge stressful burst. THANK YOU!

  9. Looking forward to read more heartful and thought provoking articles. Best of luck.

  10. Wow. Nice. it is always surprising to know that people you usually ignore have a story to tell.

The picture you have taken is excellent. It made all the writing unnecessary. It is one of those kinds of picture that make me wish for a camera myself.

Even me I always used to pass through the areas and always thought of making some pictures and at last suggested this place for the photo walk. I am very happy that somebody like u who really enjoyed the place and learnt few lessons for a life time.

  12. Yes. It is very true, i have just completed reading a very short book on how to have an effective communication titled ‘The 1st 4 Seconds’ by Peter Mukerjea, where he says that ‘A smile is the best way to relieve the tension and break the ice.’ and ‘ The basic idea of similing is to make a statement about yourself’.

Smiling is best way to start a communication and it is the first thing that will imprint your impression in the person you meet.

  13. thank you pradipta and prashanth.
