The success of any business depends upon how effectively it can handle competition and crisis. There is no exaggeration in saying that managing crisis is perhaps more important than managing competition. If a business organization fails to manage a crisis, then it would soon face failure.
Relevant and timely decisions are the milestones of a firm’s achievements.
These decisions greatly depend upon how well the company knows the pulse of the public. For this they need a good leader who can efficiently intermingle with others and make better decisions. This competent leader is none other than the public relations officer or the PRO.
The job of a public relations officer is not quite simple. The adorable icon of a majestic company owes much to the work of a PRO. Analyzing prevailing trends, examining the attitude of the population to a particular program and giving guidance to top leaders regarding future implementations are only a few. Thus it is mandatory to possess certain skills to be a good public relations officer.
The skills needed to be a good PRO-
- Excellent communication skills- The PRO is required to interact with a lot of people in and out as a part of business procedures. Without good verbal and non-verbal communication skills, no message can be conveyed in the proper sense. It is the PRO who is supposed to speak to the public or the media as a representative of the company. His defending of the company while managing a crisis depends upon the excellence of his interpersonal skills.
- The skill to judge and make decisions- This is another important skill to be developed by a public relations executive. His job involves studying facts about business affairs and analyzing its features to choose the most appropriate. He is the one who initially makes a decision for counseling top leaders about a certain feature.
- Fine listening skills- An excellent PRO will definitely be a keen listener. He should pay attention to what others specify before expressing his view point. It is necessary because, without a clear understanding of affairs, his wont be able to report to the leaders accurately.
- Good negotiation skills- The PRO serves as a bridge between the company and the public. Handling the public is not an easy task since people possess different characteristics. It is the PRO who should convince them about his company and thereby build a healthy, trustworthy and long-lasting relationship.
- Self-confidence- As in any job, the public relations field also requires a high level of self-confidence. If a person is not confident about his skills and qualities, he won’t ever succeed in his ventures. So for everything to work well and good, self-confidence is a must.
- Dedication and sincerity- As mentioned earlier, the job responsibilities of a PRO are numerous. Without complete dedication and sincerity, the job would be a hectic procedure. Moreover, dedication and sincerity are two factors without which no career can flourish. The PRO should be broad-minded enough to face criticisms and suggestions for improvement. The ease in adapting to changes and a mindset to accept innovations are advantageous.
If you believe that you have all the qualities to be a powerful public relations executive, hold your head high; the public relations field is awaiting you.

I would like to add one more feather in your post.
A good PRO should try to remain accesible, open and friendly to everyone naturally. Your general behaviour should be devoid of all sorts of egos. The worst enemy any PRO may have is ego ladden persona. Sometimes, you occupy very good position in an organization because of your proximity with the bossses and that starts showing on your behaviour and eventually start creating a chain reaction of resentment against your existence. So one should always take great care while interacting any one. The way you behave never goes unnoticed and it may make you either more successful or force you to a titanic end.
with best compliments,
Ashok
