Can Animal Experimentation be Justified?

Using animals as subjects to experiments is cruel. Knowing this and yet accepting it as ‘alright’ is crueler. Animals that are subjected to experiments are put to a lot of suffering and pain. They lead the most disturbing and maddening lives in cages, unsure of the fate awaiting them on the very next day. We are much determined about ‘human rights’ but we have the least concern for animal rights. Why are we disregarding them?  Animals can’t speak, but they can FEEL.

animal experimentation

Animal torture or medical research?

Did you know that more than a 100 million animals, especially primates are being subjected to terrifying experiments in the name of medical research each year? Is this really desirable, when we have evidences (in the form of confessions of scientists) that can clearly state that majority of these experiments are carried out needlessly? It is also excruciating that most of these experiments have nothing to contribute to medicines for humans. Then WHY IS ALL THIS DONE? Conducting experiments and research in the name of development is justifiable. But torturing a living being merely in the name of curiosity is against humanity.

The validity of human medicine and animal testing

Human beings and animals belong to entirely different species. Though humans evolved out of animals (monkeys) there are significant and fundamental differences between both. From this point of view, it is utterly stupid to believe that animal testing can bring about precise results on human uniqueness. Moreover the scientist, who carries out the experiment, will be more concentrated on his paper and its recognition, than on the validity of the ultimate results. If he is ‘duty-bound’ enough, he might carry on the same experiment for any number of times until he gets the anticipated outcome.

A lot of studies have been conducted to prove that animal experimentation has the least contribution to human diseases and its cure. Then what could be the motive behind this inhumanity? It’s nothing other than INHUMANITY itself. Or else in what way could you rationalize the act of driving metal pipes into the skulls of chimps to study about the relationship between ‘stress and menstrual cycle in women’? How on earth can you find a link between the topic of study and the subsequent experiment? This single instance proves how irrelevant animal experiments are, on human health.

Alternatives for animal testing

Several non-animal and ‘humane’ testing alternatives have been devised to bring an end to this brutality. These methods are found to be sophisticated, cost-effective and time-saving. Yet in many countries, researchers are reluctant to move toward these. Some of the so called methods are-

  • Embryonic stem cell test
  • Human skin model tests
  • Tests on human skin leftover after surgical procedures
  • Tests on human volunteers for mild experiments

These methods can be effectively used to walk away from the viciousness of animal experimentation. An abrupt switch over from the on going practices is not possible. But make up your mind and do your little bit to save hundreds of innocent animals on earth.
