What are the qualities that distinguish a successful investor from a not-so-successful investor? Is it education? Do you really need to be a high-flying graduate from the ivy-league management colleges to become a successful investor? Well, in that case, there is a lot of evidence that points to the contrary. I am certainly not discounting the importance of a good education, and expertise in financial world is a definite plus. But you can hardly count “education” as a personal quality, don’t you? Do you need to be well informed about the ins and outs and the current happenings in the financial and investments market? Again, if that was the case, reporters in the pink papers would be very wealthy indeed! (I may be wrong in this regard, I will definitely like to hear from you if you are a financial reporter and have created wealth out of your information edge!).
What, then, are the qualities of a successful investor, that set him (or her) apart from the rest of ordinary guys like you and me?
Successful Investors have a Plan –
They have complete clarity about their financial goals, and the manner in which they will achieve that goal. They have a complete idea about where they are currently, where they want to go, and most importantly, how they will reach there. Financially speaking, of course!
Successful Investors are Disciplined –
They have the ability to stick to their plans, and take all the necessary steps to fulfill those plans. They stick to their guns over a long, long period of time, without faltering or failing.
Successful Investors are Courageous -
They have the courage of their convictions. Once they have decided their plan of action, and the route that they will take to reach their goals, they will courageously seek the best possible instrument for their purpose. In this, they will not be swayed by the market rumors, the market conditions or the fashion of the day.
Successful Investors are Independent Thinkers -
They believe in being independent in their financial decisions and thinking. When the rest of us cower into a corner, fearful of the plummeting stock market, they will seek valuable deals. And when the rest of us are falling over each other to get on board in a bull run, they will step back, and again look for a valuable deal.
Successful Investors are Patient –
They realize that a good investment is almost always a long term game. Just checking the value of the portfolio three times a day, or worrying endlessly is not going to help you. Good investment may take time to show results. Sometimes, it may take a very long time. This might need loads of patience on your part.
Successful Investors are Flexible –
They understand the value of their investments, but do not needlessly fall in love with it. they fully understand the dangers of getting too much emotionally attached with their investments. Sometimes, good financial sense dictates that you get rid of some instrument or a part of your portfolio. This can prove to be a tough task if you are emotionally tied to it.
Successful Investors Learn from their Mistakes -
They realize that they are human, and might, nay, will make bad decisions once in a while. But they certainly will not make the same mistake twice! They have a long memory, and keep tabs of all their previous financial follies and mistakes.
After reading all these points, if you feel that smart investors are actually using common sense, you are perfectly correct! Yet, common sense is very hard to find, especially in the world of investments. That is the exact reason why a successful investors are such a rare breed!
