3-Idiots-Music-Album-CoverWhen I first heard about the movie theme back in October-November, the first question that came to my mind was how would a starcast of Aamir Khan, Sharman and Madhavan justify being students of an engineering college. Thankfully I didn’t utter too many words against the starcast at that point because otherwise I would have to eat my words. To begin with I would say they did a splendid job on screen. Not at any point in the movie you would get the chance to think about their relevance as students of an engineering college.

I think I can safely say that Aal Izz Well (All is well) with the movie. Rather I should say Aal Izz Vary Vary Well (All is very very well).
The pace at which the movie runs is spectacular. It flows so well from the beginning till the end that you would not realize that more than couple of hours have gone by. There was another thing that bothered me before watching the movie. It was the fact that the movie is based on 5 point someone. Somehow in the past many cases were witnessed when the movie that were based on a book’s plot failed to deliver. But 3-idiots surprised all by the kind of fresh thoughts being put behind almost everything in the movie. Be it the naming of the laundry boy millimeter, be it the naming of the puppies gigabyte, megabyte and kilobyte.

I felt the casting was exceptional. Viru Sahastrabudhhe was so funny and at the same time so reflective of the inflexible system that we all grow up. And it is beyond any doubts that the role of Virus was portrayed by Boman Irani with exceptional perfection. I felt everyone did a great job. FarhanNitrate and PreRajuLization were also too good. Oops I mean Madhavan and Sharman Joshi!! Kareena did well in her role. And she looked great in the indo-western outfits. A particular character needs special mention here. Its the “Silencer” or Chatur! The character was very well justified by Omi Vadya. It was a chamatkari (Great that I got the word right) role played by the actor. The expressions and the body language was too good.

The screenplay and dialogue were apt and kept the audience glued to the movie. Be it the display of state of affairs at Raju’s house or be it the portrayal of Virus’s character. The director was able to make people laugh, cry, anticipate, worry at his will. I feel that is a great success when you consider movie making. And it is quite a difficult task to achieve.

The music is very very pertinent to the scenes that carried them. The song which very well connected with all those people who are being constrained by a stubborn system is the track called “Give me some sunshine”. I feel Suraj Jagan did a great job with that song. Shantanu Moitra was upto the task with all the tracks in the movie. The music reinforced the message being spread by the movie.

Some people might relate it to the fact that the movie is in similar lines with Taare zameen Par. I am also from the same school paperDiathought. Yes it is again another attempt to change the system which creates, sorry manufactures, machines in the veil of humans rather than educated individuals. So it is similar to TZP in many ways but it has its unique message mainly to the youth. The movie although had lot of fun associated with it, but the larger picture that it attempts to portray is the fact that we need to change our mindset and become more flexible when it comes to our career choices. We should follow our dreams and do things which we are good at and which makes us happy. And since in Indian context, where the career decisions depends on so many people, it is needed for everyone to understand the importance of getting it correct. I won’t delve deeper into the message that it portrayed. The movie maker did a impressive job of making an unique picturization of a theme which is so easy to associate with and yet was able to put across the right message.

By this time you might feel that I have forgotten Rancho. No I haven’t!! How can I? I mean you just need to stand up and bow to this person named Aamir Khan. He played the role of an engineering student with such composure, such grace and such minute details that only words of appreciation can come out. The expressions, the mannerisms and everything else was taken care of in such a meticulous manner. It was a five star performance without an iota of doubt.

Simply put you can say that the movie was fun and full of entertainment. Some people would say that there were certain things mainly in the second half of the movie which were impractical. Like the interview, the child birth etc. I would like to say only one thing to them Mammu Kya Praticality ka Dum pakar ke rote rahte ho yaar…. tension hatao aur bolo Aal Izz Well (Why being so stringent about practicality always, enjoy and have fun).

I would end up saying that it is a must watch movie and I won’t mind watching it more than once.. Great job done Mr. Providhucer and Mr. DiHiranirector. Oops I mean Mr. Vidhu Vinod Chopra the producer and Rajkumar Hirani the director!

i have been hearing about this movie for so long that finally i decided to go see it.personally i found it very disappointing..i know there r a lot of flaws in our education system and this movie tries to point out these flaws especially those in the iits.
i am a student at iitb myself and i tthought that things shown in this movie cannot be more off the mark.it was unrealistic and exaggerated.it continued these cliches about lack of appreciation for free thinking in iits without any sound justification.how much research actually went into it?clearly not much since they showed a delivery with a vaccum cleaner..
its very easy to point out problems.finding a solution is another story..their solution-to pee on ur principals front door when u dont like how he is.somehow i dont find that inspiring.
a movie shouldnt just show people wat they want to see without a fibre of truth in it.its irresponsible.

    • Good to know that the elite institutes are not falling for this trap of rat race.. But I still feel that the education system as such cannot be evaluated based on the premium ones. And I still feel that it is very much true for most of the places, even in some of the premium institutes as well.

Although the truth is that movies don’t show the entire truth and need to be responsible, but at the same time there is some truth atleast in whatever been shown in this one.

You must be wondering why I am commenting so late.Actually I rarely watch movies. Yesterday I went for 3 idiots after having seen TZP, God knows how many years back. And I felt the same, what you have written. This is the first movie,I felt like seeing once more.
While watching the movie I realized, Swanand Kirkire, the lyricist of this movie, wrote the songs so well because this was his own life somewhat. He is my friends brother. His parents were very against his choice of proffesion.Though are both good classical singers and I always found uncle reading some classic. But movie was way beyond their imagination, both being in simple govt. jobs.Once some relative saw Swanand playing a beggar type role in a street play about which his parents didn’t know anything.Aunty was furious, but Swanand remained focussed.Tension eased when he got admission in NSD,but his parents were still very unsure.None of us could imagine then, he had such talents. When he won the award for Parineeta, his sister and myself were discussing, given his family background & culture in which he has grown, at least he will always write meaningful lyrics and never some cheap ones.Swanand will always be an example of focussed determination for us.

  3. Watched it today… finally! An excellent movie! Enjoyed every minute of it.

  4. Wow! A great review. After reading this review, Iam looking forward to watch it. Hoping to read more valuable articles from you. All the best.

    Thanks

  5. today the film feild administrators has no goals about their film making.till today in india and entire globe no fellow from film world has not clear and realised so far about their role to be played in this modern world to teach and educate the society in addition to fun and enjoyment for three hours with a fil glance.every one having one goal that how to earn money but the processes and trails adopted for self money earning is whether benefitable and thought prevoking and teaching a good lesson to youngsters that who are juniors to global game without any global experience no body knows.in this contest ,no one is contemplating to rebuilt and rejunevate the psychologies of human sole core who are lacking will power about their personality formation.so,today, from home to society including film makers are not concentrating on this burning issue .it is wonder to say that the birth given ,working mother and father already held-up (thier hands with their business about money making) with respect to their children breeding and administration control.other elders like teachers, supriors of family ,.well wishers and other nearest relatives are also not concentrating about the bereaved childrens future due present global nuclere familes set up.god only knows what happens tomorrow about global youngsters generation future.
so,the time has riped to direct very immediately to a new-wave direction in the twenty first century modern global game. ofcourse,we all lacking good directors in all walks of life game.so all are held up their hands from their responsibity from rebuilding the globe to date back to old our great masters moral standard of living life.in this global flare up jucture,i request the film makers administration of india and entire globe.come forward and see the global problems and study them in detail in depth and have solutions by condecting round table conferences with global great thinking masters and well wishers of future global game.sort out good effective solutions for each and every life problem.the gist of every problem solution will have to be picturised by making good family oriented films stories and diection for the moral charectors building and humanity spirit up-keeping in every living soul of earth to please our great universal boss “”god”" now itself.ifnot,no one but every one of global earthian is has to take responsibility for future global annihilation in all walks of human life.
so.my dear film makers, donot waste your money by making bad films. ban them by iron fire hand and punish them very seriously who making bad films like sex oriented to prevoke youngsters emotions.for this task including global govts.,the parents.,teachers.,relatives,well grand parents, society well wishers from all communities have to take active part to remake and built a new human devine oriented society on earth again to show our status to our great masters already left from earth long back by enjoying fully the hundred years life with great satifaction comforts.hope every thing should be in positive direction run from every coming tomorrows for the welfare of all human arround the globe.god blesses us definitely for this good cause grand success.

  6. Rohini says:

Agree with Debomita!!! if someone is pointing toward moon, then we should watch moon instead of finding out the pros & cons of person hand. Raj Kr. Hirani has done excellent work to show mirror to the unrevised and unchanged education system of India, where most of ppl suffer from spondylosis due the school bag they carried during their school days, but wht we are doing jst trying to find wht were the technical mistake in movie.

Pradipta gr8 review, I also had same reaction for the star caste of movie when i heard it for first time, but movie proved everything wrong.

  7. Ankur Chakraborty says:

The movie and scenes are great– but with too many Technological inconsistencies wrt laptop models, airtel usb modem, scooterette models etc. Bane of in-film advertisement – Timing it right. 10 years ago some of these items were not even in existence…let alone in India.

Like, kareena’s bike -> Scooty pep plus – 2008 May launch, Airtel usb modem (used for video conferencing at the hospital in 2000!!!) – launched in 2007~2008 and so on :)

And the biggest part: the movie talks about Self Actualization…. how can one attain that without attaining the previous four levels of Maslow’s hierarchy??

    • Good observations… but i guess they can get off with the declaration that all is hypothetical :-)

    • However I have a doubt whether we can take the message that it talks about self actualization or not.. I guess it just simply wants to say that attain education in the right way.. that is crave for excellence and true learning rather than mugging things up and getting grades… I don’t know whether we can relate it to self actualization or not..

    • Debomita Gupta says:

      Hi,
I am an AAM JANTA… dont know Maslow or whatever hierarchy.. then can’t I attain self actualization??????

I did not find the movie talking about self actualization…The movie was about not to bind our knowledge only to books.. we learn for the sake of marks and not for knowledge..

The movie also depicted an excellent bonding of friendship which again did not follow any rules or logic.

And regarding the mistakes you are stating.. the director never told that the college days were of 1999 or 2000. We can assume that the college days are from 2008-09 onwards and the future years of their re-union are yet to come. Then only we will see no discrepancy in the plot and its content.

I am sorry to state but seeing what I remember is the book written by Amartya Sen.. “The Argumentative Indian”.. we never look for the actual message that film tried to give to us.. but rather was concerned about the scooty model, datacard used etc etc.

  8. abhishek patra says:

    yeah!! aal izz well!! :)

  9. Niladri says:

Rightly pointed out Pradipta……it is indeed a refreshing as well a thought provoking movie!!!!!!!
